Heating products achieve Microgeneration Accreditation

Mitsubishi Electric is pleased to announce that the entire range of Ecodan low carbon residential water and space heating products has just received full accreditation

for the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).

The MCS enables householders to receive a grant when installing Ecodan - advanced heat pump systems that are specifically designed for the unique conditions of the mass heating market in the UK.

“As a nation, we need to consume less energy and with everyone looking to save money products like Ecodan can make a real difference to both household fuel bills and our carbon emissions,” explained Max Halliwell, Product Manager, Mitsubishi Electric Heating Systems who accepted the MCS accreditation from Richard Hardy, Director of Sustainability, BRE Global.

“The MCS process is very robust and also looks at the companies installing this type of equipment so that customers can take real confidence that they will get the reduction in fuel consumption expected,” added Halliwell.

MCS is designed to evaluate both products and installers against a strict criteria for microgeneration technologies. Owned by the department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR), formerly known as the DTI, the scheme provides consumer protection whilst ensuring that all grants are spent effectively.

Ecodan uses proven heat pump technology to extract free, renewable energy from the surrounding air to reduce the amount of primary energy needed.  It offers UK households the opportunity of lower running costs over gas and oil. Easy to install it requires only a single-phase electricity connection and flow and return water pipes. As the refrigerant circuit at the heart of the system is self-contained and factory-sealed there is no need for installers to be CORGI registered or to have an F-Gas qualification. Ecodan works well with both radiators and underfloor heating and unlike traditional boilers, Ecodan units are conveniently sited outside the property to free up valuable internal space.

“We have developed a product range that will deliver low carbon heating to the vast majority of UK properties built from the 1970’s onwards. Achieving MCS accreditation helps prove that Ecodan is set to deliver a real reduction in energy use,” explained Halliwell. “Heating and hot water accounts for over 70% of the energy we use in our homes so if we as a nation can cut this consumption, we can make a real difference to both emissions levels and fuel bills.

The Ecodan series will work with a wide variety of tank sizes and specifications and is also available as a stand-alone unit for situations where a packaged solution is not required. This provides installers with more choice and flexibility, allows Ecodan to be used with a greater array of pumps, valves, controls and tanks and now means that in addition to helping new build houses achieve the Code for Sustainable Homes, a wider range of existing properties from single flats to larger houses can benefit from air source heat pump technology.
